About a week ago, I teamed up with Mr Hoegne himself, Michel Lucas, and spent two days in Belgium’s wonderful High Fens area to shoot autumn colors along the numerous streams. On Sunday we made the wise decision to forgo the Hoegne river as it is the most touristic stream of them all and can get overcrowded on sunny weekend days or school holidays (as was the case). Instead, we visited one of the many other streams that source somewhere on the enormous plateau. And to be honest, it was just as photogenic if not even better. On Monday, when normal people tend to go to work, we ‘did’ the Hoegne river. Both days were very enjoyable. It had been a while since I had all the time in the world to photograph , instead of just a few hours and thus time pressure in the back of my head. The piece of mind really shows in the results and the kind of images I create. Of course I shot some wide-angle landscapes, but spent most of the time looking for patterns and abstracts. Above, I show you a few inches of La Hoegne river, covered with bacteria film and a single blade of grass. Not your typical Hoegne image and not your typical autumn colors.
Een dikke week geleden reisde ik met Mr Hoegne, Michel Lucas, af voor twee dagen fotograferen in de Belgische Hoge Venen. We besloten de Hoegne op zondag links te laten liggen, want het is de bekendste van de stroompjes en zeker in zonnige weekenden en vakantieperioden kan het er stervensdruk zijn. We bezochten een van de vele andere stroompjes die op de hoogvlakte ontspringen en eigenlijk was deze net zo mooi, zo niet mooier. Op maandag toen de rust was weergekeerd zijn we alsnog naar de Hoegne gegaan. Beide dagen waren bijzonder prettig, het was voor mij lang geleden dat ik zonder tijdsdruk kon fotograferen en dat is te zien aan de resultaten, zowel in kwaliteit als in het soort beelden. Hoewel ik natuurlijk de typische landschappen heb gefotografeerd, heb ik de meeste tijd besteed aan het vinden en fotograferen van patronen en abstracten. Zo kan het gebeuren dat ik een foto laat zien van slechts enkele centimeters Hoegne, en niet eens met typische herfstkleuren. Het blauw komt van een bacteriefilm op het water.
