I have been travelling to Kenya’s larger Maasai Mara ecosystem since 2013. Regularly, I organise photo tours for small groups of 3-7 photographers to this African Eden. Vast undulating grassy plains with the occasional acacia tree, meandering streams, rocky outcrops and croton bushes are home to more animals than one can photograph in a lifetime. Imagine huge grazing herds and of course the predators that follow in their every step.
In November 2025, I organise another photo tour to Kenya. This time we will spend 13 or 14 days and 12 or 13 nights in Ol Pejeta and Solio (3), Amboseli (4) and Maasa Mara (5). This is the ultimate safari destination, with dense animal populations and beautiful landscapes.
In the Mara, the increased entrance fees have substantially lowered the amount of vehicles, so time to go back! November brings the short rainy season which means thunderstorms build during the day with beautiful cloudy skies all day long. In the afternoons, we might work our way through a heavy downpour. In the mornings, all this moisture can lead to a foggy experience. The wildebeest herds may have gone, but all territorial predators (lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena) are still around, just like elephants, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and all kinds of antelope. Our base is a beautiful luxury camp situated at a bend in the Talek river.
In Ol Pejeta, Solio and Amboseli, the main focus is on the big grey animals: rhino and elephant. Of course, we will also look for other photographic opportunities. But big cats are plenty in Maasai Mara, and these places offer very good opportunities for rhino and elephant. Even wide-angle close-ups are possible. In both parks, we stay in beautiful lodges and camps situated in the middle of the action.
During the 13 or 14 days, we make use of sturdy Landcruiser vehicles that have been specially modified for photography. Each photographer has a full row at his or her disposal, so plenty of space to move around. All game drives, meals and park fees are included, as is transport between parks.
